Eastern Screech Owl Nominate subspecies Megascops asio asio Britannia Conservation Area, Ottawa, Ontario 19 April 2010 Eastern screech-owls come in two colour morphologies, red and grey, although the grey morph is typically more common. This species of owl usually roosts in old woodpecker dens or other hollow tree cavities, using their cryptic plumage for camouflage. It is all too easy to overlook a roosting screech-owl; listening for their haunting calls is a preferred method of locating them.
